Film Review: Peaceful Warrior

Is it not amazing how some things in our life fit in so perfectly together? Do you ever think about how many “coincidences” you encounter in a typical week or month? Is there really such a thing as being in the harmony of life – your own life?

The above used to be my questions, that was until I realized that there is much more to this life than “simple coincidences” or this thing called “luck”.  When you align yourself with your spirit, when you start living life more and more out of the three-part being that we all are, life miraculously starts to fit together so perfectly for you it will make your head spin. It never ceases to put a smile on my face or make me shake my head in disbelief.

Whether you believe in the Law of Attraction or not is not the point here.  It is about the fact that when you align yourself to your true and deeper calling in life, life aligns itself for you.

Such an example came last night in my own life, when my husband and I were looking for something to watch on T.V.  Over time we have become very selective in what we watch and give our attention to.  Hence we have excluded wasting our time on things like the news, which no offense is negative, drama filled and in most cases very biased.  We avoid horror movies as there is no need for us to be put in a state of fear, disgust or unease, plus it really takes away from the beauty of life and last but not least, we try to avoid violent programs. Now given our programming today this is a hard one as there seem to be some levels of violence in almost everything that comes out of Hollywood, but we are managing quite well with avoiding it, as I do not see how any of us humans can support in any way, shape or form inflicting harm upon each other.

Okay so to get to my point it was one of those evenings when we were looking at what is on and there really wasn’t anything in terms of quality programming, or so I thought.  I stumbled upon a movie that was starting called “Peaceful Warrior“.  We had surprisingly never heard of the movie, but as I was flipping channels I stopped on this one for what I thought was going to be a quick moment since I read the description and athlete’s and accidents just don’t appeal to us either.  But that moment turned into something spectacular, we only had to hear the first few lines being spoken and we were speechless.  They were beautiful words, full of wisdom spoken by one of the main actors Socrates played by Nick Nolte. So one line after another we listened and were taken aback by this movie that turned out to be extremely well worth seeing!

In summary “Peaceful Warrior” is about a successful college gymnast who meets an unusual character who works as a service person at a gas station who begins to transform his life.  The young man is quite typical in that he possesses characteristics of being impulsive, getting easily offended, having rage, shallowness, competitiveness and living like most of us in the future as opposed to the present moment.

As the young man continues to train for his events, he visits his new-found mentor regularly, more out of curiosity at first and begins to start waking up to a whole new life and side of himself that at times is very difficult to face. And then comes the braking moment when the young man has an accident and is told he will barely walk again, never mind train gymnastically.

Naturally he is devastated and believes he has lost everything including himself, after all if he is not a successful gymnast and that is not his life purpose then who is he and what is the purpose?  It is at that point that he starts to take his mentor in a much more serious way and begins to experience living life in a higher and more meaningful state.  You will of course have to watch it to fill in the entire story line and experience the richly inspiring and heartwarming feeling that this movie will leave you with.

So case and point: I do not believe we found this movie, I believe it found us.  We were deeply moved and inspired and its wisdom reflected our thinking and our way of life. Many people might be skeptical of course and dismiss this as just a coincidence and to you I say, “just like there are no ordinary moments, there are no coincidences”.  Life gives us what we look for, what we thirst for, what the deepest desires are of our three-part being – body, mind and soul.

You only have to know what it is that you want on the higher level of your being and be assured life will provide the rest.  And no, of course not, don’t get me wrong, we are not talking cars and diamond rings here.  It is about addressing the needs of who you truly are “a spiritual being, having a physical experience”.  You will know when something talks to your soul, just like this movie did for us and hopefully for you too.

On a side note however, I am so excited about this encounter because it is not just about the movie.  The movie has probed a new investigation within, to the life and work of Dan Millman as the movie is based on his book, which is based on his life story.  So far I have had the chance to explore his web site which contains a blog, a schedule of his seminars and his materials.  He has written a number of books all which appear to be in alignment with the awakening of living a deeper and more purpose filled life in the moment of now.

So glad you had the opportunity to see the movie, as you know nothing is a coincidence! I love Dan Millman’s books. He is a great writer. Peaceful Warrior was one of my favorites that he wrote. Also The Life You Were Meant to Live is very insighful, I often go back and reread sections of this regarding myself or others in my life…

Hi, Evita! I found you when I was searching for a Peaceful Warrior video for a blog post I’m working on. Isn’t this a wonderful, transformative movie? I saw it in the theaters and I also have the DVD. I use the quote “Where am I? I am here.” a lot in my life, when my mind is rushing onto the next hundred things. When it’s all getting jumbled, I stop and ask myself “Where am I?” As I answer “here,” my monkey mind calms down and I can be fully present.
