Last week I had the chance to view the latest ground breaking documentary entitled “A Delicate Balance.” I had learned about this movie thanks to one of our readers and hence I thank all those of you who bring these wonderful topics and initiatives to my attention, where I can share them with even more.
“A Delicate Balance” is a film that invites us to look at ourselves, our health, what we eat and how we treat our Earth from a very conscious standpoint. For the past few decades we have been hearing about various disease rates climbing and climate change due to Global Warming getting worse and worse.
This film is not about to preach to you more of that. Instead, this film is the loudest alarm bell that we have yet to hear to truly wake up and stop treating these incidences where our health and that of the Earth is concerned as some natural phenomenon of life. This film makes us rise up to the highest version of ourselves and face the truth of this present Earth in the moment of now.
I have seen many amazing documentaries this year and have tried to tell you about most of them. When it comes to “A Delicate Balance” it has topped my list as the all time best documentary where our diet, health and the state of the Earth is concerned. I am sure you can sense the urgency in my tone as I write this, but it comes from a deep passion of knowing within. Knowing that if we do not increase our consciousness and start making some serious lifestyle changes, acting out of love for the good of all, we will not be building a pretty picture for our future where our existence and quality of life is concerned.
Thus today I share with you some highlights from “A Delicate Balance” and invite you to see a film that will not entertain you, but make you think perhaps harder and deeper than you ever have before and expose to you truths that many have a very hard time facing.
Before I go into any more details, you can take a moment and check out this short 1-minute movie trailer. It does not say much with words, but speaks volumes with its images.
For a longer and more detailed trailer of what the movie is all about click here.
The Background
A Delicate Balance is an Aaron Scheibner Film and is narrated by Dr. Adriana Scheibner. This film took three years in the making and has more than 50 years of research behind it.
It features some of the most respected, world renowned and leading health experts such as:
-
Dr. T. Colin Campbell (of the China Study)
-
Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (internationally known surgeon, researcher and clinician)
-
Dr. Neal Bernard MD (author of many books including “Turn off the fat genes”)
-
Dr. Walter Willett from Harvard
-
Dr. John A. McDougall
-
Dr. Michael Greger
-
Maneka Gandhi (Minister of Environment in India)
The purpose and mission statement for this film is as follows:
Our aim is to raise awareness and help to educate people on how human, animal and planetary health are affected by the consumption of meat and dairy and industrial animal agriculture.
Beyond what the producer says, the motivation and purpose for this film is obvious. It does not sell a new diet. It does not sell an unrealistic solution to our health and environmental crisis. It is simply hoping to spread the message of love, compassion and wisdom where our health and that of the environment is concerned. It is trying to inspire us to wake up out of a deep sleep that has lasted hundreds of years where man was taught to dominate nature at any will and cost he chose. It is such a deeply moving film because it forces us to face ourselves and the decisions we are each making on a daily basis.
The Content
This movie features interviews from some of the best health experts in the world today, who are well respected individuals and who do not conform to what the masses are doing and saying.
If you are familiar with the famous China Study, you will that much more appreciate this film as it brings to light all of the undeniable research where animal products and our health, as well as that of the Earth’s is concerned.
It is not some cheap ploy to promote vegetarianism or veganism. It is just a hard and raw look at how things are, how they got this way and what the consequences of that are for us and the Earth.
The movie brilliantly begins by discussing the origins of how our world became so protein and animal product obsessed. It then begins its slew of academic research behind the clear link between animal protein and most of the diseases we are seeing skyrocketing in today’s society.
If you are expecting to find this information on the news, don’t – as remember that our world revolves around money and the economy prevails above all else – including human health and justice. Hence cattle, pig, chicken and fish corporations do not want this information becoming mainstream. What these beings do not understand is that life is not about “I can only have it this way or no way.” Life equals choices – choices at each and every moment to express the highest version of ourselves and contribute to the greater good of all.
The movie then touches upon all that and more where our health is concerned. It clears up how much protein we really need and the difference between plant and animal protein. It addresses all of the following problems and issues, including:
-
high cholesterol and cancer risk
-
current vitamin D level problems
-
healthy calcium levels and sources
-
the continuous rise of autoimmune diseases
-
multiple sclerosis factors
-
osteoporosis factors
-
iron levels and sources
-
the problem with fish today
-
breakdown of the diet for a long and healthy life
-
environmental impacts of our current diets
-
deforestation and its effects
-
methane production
-
water shortage
-
energy depletion
-
the state of the oceans
We either behave as rational, intelligent human beings or we continue to suppress our intelligence.
The choice is in your shopping basket and in your head.
A Delicate Balance
Personal Commentary
I have to share with you that as I watched this movie, my spirit within me stirred. We all know thanks to our magnificent inner guidance system – our intuition, when something makes sense and when something doesn’t. For me this film and this message is beyond making sense, it is about waking up as quickly as we can, as our quality of life and survival is dependent on it.
Overall the movie is brilliantly done and you can easily see the amount of hard work that went into the making of it. The imagery supports the movie very well and makes it impossible not to become emotionally involved. It makes something within our hearts really call out for a change. The speakers are fantastic and show their expert knowledge in all of the areas they talk about.
I do not see how anyone could criticize this movie in any way other than trying to attack it from an economical perspective. But we all know that the economy is not going to save our Earth or our health. Other than that, egos may and I am sure will get in the way as anyone resistant to change will somehow feel like this is perhaps some kind of attack on the “meat eaters”. All I have to say to that, is for once may we think with our hearts, instead of our resistant to change egoic minds. They have been thinking for us way too long and hence it is no surprise that we are in the state we are where our health and the Earth is concerned.
In terms of my favorite part, I have to tell you the whole movie is my “favorite part.” However, if I had to choose one part that stood out for me above all else it was when the researchers and doctors talked about cancer. We all know that today cancer rates are a staggering 1 in 2.5 (on a male and female average in North America) and all dread this disease. We have charities, donations, campaigns all looking for or promising a cure, but we have overlooked one huge detail. We already have the cure.
“The Cure For Cancer is in What We Eat”
So many of us just accept it as normal that our bodies are these weak vessels that fall apart after about 40 years and are prone to all sorts of disease. But most of us do not step away from the darkness and into the light of consciousness to realize that these bodies were created by a magnificent source of pure love, light and consciousness. It would just seem really strange that God can build this amazing planet and all these amazing creatures and then these poor, weak human bodies that were somehow meant to live in some sort of physical suffering and deterioration.
I know that most of humanity has accepted this as just the normal state of being, but to me it almost makes a mockery of God. We as human beings are so ready and willing to accept that God “gave” us these bodies doomed to fail, but so not willing to accept our own roles in their deterioration.
If we lived in universal balance with ourselves and our Earth, for not a second do I believe that we would have even half the diseases or suffering we have today. The Earth, just as our body, is an intelligent system made to sustain itself given the right support, but we keep removing the support, throwing in stressors and then wondering where things keep going wrong.
I also greatly loved the powerful message the movie leaves its viewers with:
“Together we can save the Earth, but first we have to save ourselves.”
Conclusion
For me personally, as an evolving being living on this Earth at this moment, there is just no better way to exist. That is in balance with self, others and nature, which includes all of the animals, waters, land and sky.
I have removed all animal products except organic eggs from my diet almost a year and a half ago and have honestly never felt better physically, mentally and emotionally. (The only reason for the eggs is because we can no longer get vitamin B12 naturally from nature the way our ancestors did, and until I find a natural source I am making this choice.)
I feel through this that I am not only contributing to my own healthy existence, but also to that of the Earth’s. I do not cringe at every animal that is abused and killed as I know that is not part of my creation or because of my choice. I do not cringe at every hungry face I see in the world, knowing that perhaps all those animals that would have to have been fed and slaughtered for me were not only saved but also their food was used to feed more people in the world. I do not cringe at every natural disaster, knowing that I am doing everything I can to heal the Earth.
Am I a dreamer? No. I am simply aware of what the power of one is, let alone the power of many. I know that unless we start small, we can never get anywhere big. I know that we need to be the change we want to see in the world.
For all of my dear readers who are not vegetarians or vegans or who have no interest in pursuing this path, please know that all of our choices are our own and the universal truth is that right and wrong are only and always a matter of personal perspective. Hence know that I would never judge you or those in the world who choose a different way than me – that would be counterproductive and I know that is not a trait of an evolving being or a soul of the New Earth. In the end all that matters is that we are at peace with our choices and our inner spirit, and if the decisions you are making are making you feel that then you must be doing what is right for you.
No matter what your choice though, I still strongly recommend for anyone who has the chance to see this movie as in order to do what is truly right for US, we need to educate ourselves on as much of the facts that come with this physical existence as we can.
UPDATE – Nov 19, 2009
Just want to offer a quick update that about a month after seeing this film, and some more research I had come to the conclusion that I no longer want to or need to eat eggs anymore. Hence since January 2009 I have been animal-product free. That means no meat, no seafood, no dairy, and no eggs. I feel great and have no intentions of ever going back for many health, spiritual, and environmental reasons. As for the B12, for now I am taking a supplement of B12 in pill form just for added security. I cannot predict if this will be temporary or permanent, for as my lifestyle progresses and research in these areas continues, only time will tell. For now I am very satisfied with my choices.

I found your site on Google and read a few of your other entires. Nice Stuff. I’m looking forward to reading more from you.
Evita, you are a wealth of information about meaningful films. You assist people to raise theirown awareness about ground-breaking work that is being done. Thank you for your diligence and uplifting reflections. You may never know how profound an effect you make on lives of strangers.
Hello Liara!
Thank you so much, you words are very humbling to me. I am grateful for and appreciate your feedback very much.
It is indeed so true as all of us no matter what we do, what we write, where we go and what we say are having an effect on someone everyday – the choice is of course what effect do I choose to have on someone or leave someone with?
Thus I invite all, to always think from their highest version, as each moment, we get opportunities to change people’s lives and so may it always be for the better.
Evita, thank you for your enthusiasm, insight and diligence. I will most definitely check out this film.
Hello,
And thank you for the article.
Just some thoughts…if I may.
>>The only reason for the eggs is because we can no longer get vitamin B12 naturally from nature the way our ancestors did, and until I find a natural source I am making this choice.
Letting aside that organic or not eggs cause huge suffering to the animals involved (My father is a farmer so I know the issues well). Letting aside that eggs are toxic and full of nasty stuff (“bad” cholesterol etc.).
Vitamin B12 can be obtain indeed naturally. I’m a frugivore (or igienist or 100% pure raw vegan if you like) and don’t take supplements. Other famous 100% vegan (no supplements of any kind) are the Boutenko family and and Storm Califero of The Garden Diet website (http://www.thegardendiet.com/storm.html). The latter has been vegan for 32yrs and has 3 fully vegan (born vegan) children who are in perfect health.
Indeed we humans are frugivores and the vitamin B12 issue is a non-issue indeed (http://www.rawfoodexplained.com/why-we-should-not-eat-meat/vitamin-b12.html).
Isn’t it interesting that those who got pernicious anemia aren’t generally vegan??
IF anybody is low in B12 (which should be low, anyhow) they should find the cause in their diet or habits. Humans are frugivores and introducing animal products in their diet does not solve ANY problem but simply confounds the minds even more…and make the animals and the environment pay for their (humans’)mistakes.
Thank you and have a nice time,
Gio
@ GIO – Thanks so much for your reply and thoughts on this.
Your comment made me realize instantly that I actually should have posted an update to this post (which I will now be doing) as within a month of this posting and watching this movie I stopped eating eggs. So since January 2009 I have been without any animal products such as meat, seafood, dairy or eggs and I feel fantastic. And I also have no plans of ever going back.
I have definitely done more research on eggs and even though I found a local, organic farm where the chickens ran around wherever they wanted and laid eggs naturally when they wanted, meaning none in the winter pretty much, I just came to the conclusion that I don’t need eggs in my body.
I am not so much concerned about the cholesterol, as saturated fat and trans fat are primary for raising our cholesterol, but from both a health and spiritual perspective choose to forgo the eggs.
And as for the B12, I don’t mind taking a supplement pill for now. I know today that our ancestors got this vitamin naturally from the plants they ate, which were not cooked, washed or sterilized to the nines like ours are today.
Last year too I was sort of anti-supplements thinking that my diet should provide me with everything, but a year later, lots of research later I realize that with today’s soils and farming practices it is true that most people, especially meat eaters need supplement support for optimal health. So while I am not completely for supplements, I am also not completely against them. I think there is a happy medium where some can be beneficial. And perhaps one day I won’t take a B12 supplement, for now I don’t mind just to be on the safe side.
So anyways, thanks again Gio for your thoughts and the link. That was very helpful, especially that I am moving more and more in the raw food direction. It is wonderful to hear that your dietary lifestyle is working so well for you also!
