Movie Review: The Compass

Last year I was introduced to a movie that was in the making and set to come out this February 2009. Excitement was in the air, as it seemed another life changing documentary was in the works. There was The Secret, there was The Wheel of Life and today there is The Compass.

The Compass is the latest documentary that has been released that looks at our lives from a deeper angle and stimulates growth, learning and change. It moves us “from where we are, to where we want to be” – literally!

It is packed with world renowned speakers, authors and coaches who are experts in various areas of personal development. No matter where you are in your life today, “The Compass” has something to offer you, whether it be motivation, inspiration, hope or a new perspective on things.

So without any further adieu, allow me to share my thoughts and feelings about “The Compass” and introduce to you this fantastic new movie.

Overview of The Compass

The movie “The Compass” was produced by John Spencer Ellis. John Spencer Ellis is a leading expert on fitness, personal development and healthy living. John has been studying human achievement for over 20 years now and has been helping people attain their personal goals. Despite numerous achievements in his life to date, John felt he had to do something on a grander scale to make a positive change in the world, and thus the movie and book “The Compass” was born.

The movie starts off in a beautiful log cabin of an old man who is writing on a typewriter “his story”. He begins with “I was lost until I found…” It is at this time that we begin to meet the many expert speakers featured throughout this movie that explain to us the concept of “The Compass“.

In fact, the movie features 23 expert teachers in the areas of personal development, spirituality, life coaching and more! Some of the most notable names include Bruce Lipton, Joe Vitale, John DeMartini, Marie Diamond, John Assaraf and John Spencer Ellis himself, just to name a few. You can see the full set of teachers here.

The Compass MovieWe shortly thereafter, meet “the traveler” – a man who represents the old man writing his story, and any one of us as we trek through our own journey of life. From this point on, the focus is on “the traveler” and the challenges and experiences that he encounters along his path. While “the traveler” is on a literal journey of various paths through hills, valleys and forests, the symbolic nature is for all of us to connect this to our own “journeys” that take place each day, in each of our lives.

As “the traveler” treks on, the speakers randomly, present material that is packed with wisdom, love, inspiration, encouragement and many, many tips for a more joy-filled, successful, abundant and peaceful life.

The movie covers and is thus divided into 16 segments that address various areas in our lives and along the paths of our own journeys.

The 16 sections and areas for growth of “The Compass” are as follows:

  1. First Steps
  2. Foundation
  3. Home
  4. Vision
  5. Stimulus & Response
  6. Focus
  7. Giving Back
  8. Wrong Directions
  9. Courage
  10. Self-talk
  11. Authentic Self
  12. Spirituality
  13. Determination
  14. Endless Journey
  15. Gratitude
  16. The Peak

The movie also features 4 inspirational stories from:

Charlie Gay – an ambitiously successful man, who overcame chemical and emotional challenges to live out his most fulfilling life ever by being of service to others.

Marilyn Tam – a successful business woman, who overcame racial and familial profiling and abuse to grow up to become one of the most renowned entrepreneurs of our time.

Burton Roberts – an educated and highly motivated man, who not only was featured on the Survivor show, but who believed in following one’s bliss and doing in life completely what one loves, not what society dictates.

Jeff Lewis – a man who survived and overcame 2 near death experiences as well as body amputations, to continue to live life fully and with much passion for the service of others.

The above stories alone, are sure to move one to a deeper sense of being and feeling, as well as possibly to tears, as they motivate and show what the human body and spirit are truly capable of.

In conclusion, “The Compass” hits on many personal development key messages that are so crucial to all of our lives and so applicable, and explains them in short, easy to understand and mind moving segments!

Personal Review of The Compass

My first thoughts during and after watching the movie, were of pure delight! Delight because I love that more and more material like this is coming through on our planet. So many of today’s wise teachers are saying the same messages over and over again, each in their unique way, in order for us to hear those messages.

What are those messages? Well they all boil down to one thing – we have within us all the answers that we need, we all have our own guidance system to be, do or have anything we want. We simply need to tap into that and watch life explode right before our eyes in more blissful and rewarding ways than we could have ever imagined.

It is no doubt that “our compass guides us to our magnificence.” We simply need to tap into this space and allow it to guide us, without fail. Of course this is easier said than done for many of us. That is why I am so appreciative of all the teachers, writers and speakers who continue to come through today in so many ways, so that as many people as possible can have access to their material and the help and guidance that they offer.

The opposite side to all this is that today’s teachers are not telling us or teaching us what to think or believe, instead they are teaching us how to think. Something that all teachers should be doing for their students, in my opinion. The time has come on our planet where more and more of us realize that “right” and “wrong” or “good” and “bad” are nothing more than subjective terms. Only we ourselves know what it right or wrong for us, and the only way to find that out, is to tap into our own guiding system.

As long as we live for others and based on the rules and ideas of others, we will unfortunately almost always struggle. Why? Because often we are going against our own guidance system and it hurts – whether physically or spiritually, it hurts.

It is not hard to spot the people in society who have tapped into their own “compass” and use it daily. They are happy, resourceful, at peace, fulfilled and most importantly not bothered by the limitations that others or society places on them. They are compassionate, but they know well enough who they are and what they want, to not step off of their own path and get lost on someone else’s.

In terms of the specially featured inspirational story tellers, their stories are all so incredibly moving. For me personally though, the stories of Marilyn Tam and Jeff Lewis stood out above all else and they moved me deeply. It would be hard not to hear their stories and be without tears in your eyes.

Overall, the movie is packed with wisdom, reflection, enlightenment, contemplation and some humor as well as some warm, heart wrenching moments. No matter what though, it is a movie that makes one feel good, uplifted and empowered and in my opinion, that is one of the biggest strong points of “The Compass”. It does not give any negative statistics, or focus in any way on how we lived our life “wrong” up to now. It looks at today, makes us think deeper and gives many practical examples of how to tap into that sacred guidance system within each one of us.

It is also a very easy to understand movie for everyone, as it is not packed with any “hard” science that some may have a hard time relating to. Thus it is excellent for both teens and adults alike, as no matter how young or old we are, it is never too early or too late to get to know oneself and our life’s purpose better.

I found the quality of the movie to be superb in terms of graphics and coordination of the speakers and places.

Finally in conclusion, I have to tell you, I personally love to support material like this, as some of you may have already noticed, as I know that it not only raises our own personal consciousness, inner peace and life satisfaction, but also raises the global consciousness of the planet. Today we are moving into an era where we are learning and realizing just how powerful we are as creators of our own life and reality, and movies like “The Compass” help get us there even faster!

  1. Liara Covert says:

Evita, thank you for sharing this experience and insight. You offer juicy hints and helpful direction.

Some human beings choose to be their own compass. To do so is to realize nothing is meaningless. As one chooses to empower others so they overcome their own sorrow, this brings timeless joy. To realize you are connected with everyone is to realize you can strengthen connections with everything and be happy.

  2. Evita says:

@ LIARA – Thank you for that note. Indeed I think being our own compass is one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourself.

All of the knowledge and wisdom is wihtin us and we are connected to the all!

  3. Evita,
I hadn’t heard of the compass before. You blog is so uplifting, offers so much hope and is definetly one of the greats! Thanks for sharing. Tess

  4. Liara Covert says:

I agree with Tess. You have aspecial way of drawing attention to meaningful films, books and material that does not always come into everyone’s radar screen. You are a blessing to share as you do!

  5. Evita says:

@ LIARA – I am forever humbled Liara – thank you.

  6. Lance says:

    Hi Evita,
Just the name alone – “The Compass” – brings up in me this whole idea of following our own inner compass. And then to hear the video above, and your review of it – I have to see this!

I believe very deeply that we all have within us that inner compass that will point us to our “true north”. What’s different from a normal compass is that my true north is not exactly the same as anyone else’s. What’s the same, though, is once we get our compass focused on true north – it can become a guide for us – just like a real compass is. The thing is finding “true north”. Evita, I come here and find that you are always helping me to work more in that direction. This movie is but one example of what you are offering the world here. And I mean this very much – you are truly a gift to our world – a gift to me. I feel so grounded after visiting here. And this always helps me to realign my compass. So, thank you, Evita, for everything you give and everything you do. I am honored to be here and read you words…

  7. This is a movie I must watch. I have seen “The Secret” and liked it. Makes a lot of senses.

  8. Product says:

Is this movie, The Compas, as same as the movie Golden Compas? I heard that movie is worth watching so I was just wondering…

  9. Julie says:

Evita, you’re a natural teacher, and you are now “coming into your own.” Your traditional teaching role was wonderful preparation for you, but this—THIS—is “you.” It’s just so clear to see. :)

The Compass is now on my list of must-see movies, and I look forward to it. Thank you, Evita. :)

  10. Evita says:

@ LANCE – Fantastically said Lance – we all have our own compass that points us in the right direction, but all of our compasses combined are unqiue indeed.

Well just think of it, it would be a stampede if all of us were headed in the same direction ;) Thank goodness that is not the case. That makes me think about all the people who still live feeling as if there is not enough of “everything” to go around for each person. But that is just the thing, each of our compasses are pointed in different directions. We don’t all want the same thing.

I am so thrilled by your comments,as that feeling that I get to help perhaps or touch someone else’s life in a positive way is amazing!!!

@ DENEIL – Yes it is great indeed. It has some similarities to the Secret, but at the same time, has a very good personal and unqique focus and style of its own.

@ PRODUCT – Hi there, no this is not the same as The Golden Compass, but yes that one was very good too. The main difference is that one is a fiction, sci-fi fantasy kind of movie, where as this is an educational documentary.

  11. Mark says:

Great review, I am off to check it out, thanks!

  12. Well, it looks and sounds very very good, very inspiring it seems. One I will see for sure.

And I sure like Liara’s comment about being your own compass, like J.C. Penny’s old slogan “It’s All Inside.” It really is.

  13. Liara Covert says:

Every human being is learning to sense differently. Visions that arise are part of the inner compass oriented by self-existent truth. Opening a third eye and dormant senses permits soul awakening to realms beyond the physical. The magic compass does not orient NSEW but infinite directions yet to be seen.

  14. Avatar says:

Thanks for writing review for this movie. I have heard of it but I did not rememeber anything until I saw this blog post. The trailer was great… I’m surely going to check out this movie soon. :)

  15. Evita says:

@ MARK – Thanks Mark. It really is an awesome movie, where no matter what stage of life one is at, it provides amazing tools and questions for lots of contemplation.

@ JANNIE – Yes you got it! It really is inside of us – that is why I really try to make people aware of when I counsel them, when they say I just don’t know what to do… or when people talk about general things and say stuff like, “but how do you know?”

You know – if you are tuned in to nothing more than yourself. For it is then that you are in alignment with your inner compass.

@ LIARA – Another wonderful addition! There are indeed infinite directions and possibilities! That statement from you I find so empowering because it really shows us that the possibilities of what is and what can be are endless!

@ AVATAR – You are very welcome! And I hope you enjoy the film – it is very much worth seeing!

It did have a lot of hype since the beginning when it was in production and I hear is doing really well in many states in the US where people are offering group viewings.

  16. This is my first visit here. I see your blog is so professional one. I love your review too. Thanks for your effort :)

  17. We do come equipped with all we need. And with each other’s help we can accomplish astounding things, more than we ever dreamed possible.

  18. Oh my goodness there are no words for how I feel after scanning and barely absorbing your blog and the movie short of the compass. I’ve read and reread the book The Secret today will finish Reality Check I’m 63 in July a grandma great grandma, mother wife, sibling and friend…and oh my gosh have you given me tools for my blog and more for my life and a different direction….Thank you…..

Hugs, blessings, and much more success to you..
